যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে আগামী নভেম্বরে অনুষ্ঠেয় প্রেসিডেন্ট নির্বাচনে প্রার্থী হিসেবে ডেমোক্রেটিক পার্টির আনুষ্ঠানিক মনোনয়ন গ্রহণ করে কমলা হ্যারিস তাঁর ভারতীয় বংশোদ্ভূত মায়ের স্মৃতিচারণা করেছেন।

শিকাগোতে গতকাল বৃহস্পতিবার দলের জাতীয় সম্মেলনের সমাপনী অনুষ্ঠানে উৎফুল্ল সমর্থকদের উদ্দেশে ভাইস প্রেসিডেন্ট কমলা হ্যারিস বলেন, তাঁর মা শ্যামলা গোপালান হ্যারিস মাত্র ১৯ বছর বয়সে ভারত থেকে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের ক্যালিফোর্নিয়ায় একা পাড়ি জমিয়েছিলেন।

 তাঁর দুর্দমনীয় স্বপ্ন ছিল, একজন বিজ্ঞানী হবেন; যিনি ব্রেস্ট ক্যানসারে আক্রান্ত রোগীদের চিকিৎসা দেবেন।

কমলা বলেন, ‘আমার মা শ্যামলা হ্যারিসের ছিলেন এক নিজস্ব সত্তা। আমি তাঁকে প্রতিদিন অনুভব করি, বিশেষ করে বর্তমান সময়ে। আমি জানি, তিনি আজকের এ রাতের দিকে তাকিয়ে আছেন এবং হাসছেন।’

ভাইস প্রেসিডেন্ট আরও বলেন, ‘আমাদের উঠে আসার পেছনে বেশির ভাগ ভূমিকা রয়েছে মায়ের। একটি বাড়ি কিনতে সমর্থ হওয়ার আগে ইস্ট বে–তে ছোট এক অ্যাপার্টমেন্ট ভাড়া করেছিলেন তিনি। সেখানে পাহাড়ি এলাকা বা সমতল ভূমি—দুই জায়গাতেই আপনি থাকতে পারবেন।

 আমরা সমতলে থাকতাম। সেটি ছিল অগ্নিনির্বাপণকর্মী, নার্স, নির্মাণকর্মী—এমন সব শ্রমজীবী মানুষের এক সুন্দর আবাসস্থল।’

শ্যামলা গোপালান হ্যারিস ছিলেন ব্রেস্ট ক্যানসার বিশেষজ্ঞ। বার্কলের ক্যালিফোর্নিয়া বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে এন্ডোক্রাইনোলজিতে ডক্টরেট ডিগ্রি সম্পন্ন করতে ১৯৬০ সালে ভারতের তামিলনাড়ু থেকে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে যান তিনি।

কমলা হ্যারিস, মার্কিন ভাইস প্রেসিডেন্ট

সমর্থকদের সামনে বক্তৃতায় কমলা বলেন, ‘যখন মা তাঁর ডিগ্রি অর্জন করেন, তখন পারিবারিক পছন্দে বিয়ে করতে দেশে ফিরতে চেয়েছিলেন। কিন্তু ভাগ্যক্রমে আমার বাবা ডোনাল্ড হ্যারিসের সঙ্গে তাঁর পরিচয় হয়। তিনি ছিলেন জ্যামাইকা থেকে আসা ছাত্র। 

তাঁরা একে অপরকে ভালোবাসেন ও বৈবাহিক সম্পর্কে জড়ান। পরে বোন মায়া ও আমার জন্ম হয়।’

শিকাগোর অনুষ্ঠানে কথা বলেন কমলার বোন মায়া হ্যারিসও। তিনি তাঁর মা শ্যামলা হ্যারিস উন্নত জীবনের আশায় কীভাবে ভারত থেকে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে পাড়ি জমান এবং তাঁর মেয়েদের ‘নিজেদের গল্পের রূপকার’ হতে উৎসাহিত করেন, সে বিষয় তুলে ধরেন।

মায়া আরও বলেন, যদি তাঁদের প্রয়াত মা এখানে উপস্থিত থাকতেন, তবে তিনি তাঁর কন্যাদের নিয়ে কতটা গর্বিত, তা বলতেন। এরপর তিনি বলেন, ‘অনেক হয়েছে। আপনাদের কাজ করতে হবে।’

কমলার ভারতীয় যোগসূত্র

কমলা হ্যারিস (৫৯) ১৯৬৪ সালে ক্যালিফোর্নিয়ার ওকল্যান্ডে জন্মগ্রহণ করেন। তাঁর বাবা অ্যাফ্রো–জ্যামাইকান ডোনাল্ড হ্যারিস। অর্থনীতি বিষয়ে পড়াশোনা করতে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে এসেছিলেন তিনি। সেখানেই শ্যামলা গোপালানের সঙ্গে তাঁর পরিচয়।

যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে নাগরিক অধিকার আন্দোলন চলাকালে ক্যালিফোর্নিয়া বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে কমলার বাবা-মায়ের সাক্ষাৎ হয়। এ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ক্যাম্পাস ছিল তখনকার ছাত্র আন্দোলনের অন্যতম এক কেন্দ্র।

ডোনাল্ড হ্যারিস স্ট্যানফোর্ড ইউনিভার্সিটির একজন ইমেরিটাস অধ্যাপক। শ্যামলা গোপালান ২০০৯ সালের ১১ ফেব্রুয়ারি ক্যানসারে মারা যান। পরের বছর ক্যালিফোর্নিয়ার অ্যাটর্নি জেনারেল নির্বাচিত হন কমলা।

ডোনাল্ড হ্যারিসের সঙ্গে শ্যামলা গোপালানের বিচ্ছেদ হওয়ার পর কমলা ও তাঁর ছোট বোন মায়া তাঁদের মায়ের ছায়ায় বেড়ে ওঠেন।

দুই মেয়েকে একসময় ভারত ভ্রমণে নিয়ে যান মা শ্যামলা। মাঝেমধ্যেই তামিলনাড়ুকে নিয়ে তিনি তাঁর আকর্ষণ বা হতাশার কথা প্রকাশ করতেন। কমলা হ্যারিস ২০১৯ সালে তাঁর লেখা বই ‘দ্য ট্রুথস উই হোল্ড’–এ এসব কথা তুলে ধরেছেন।

কমলা হ্যারিসকে অনেক সময় ভারতের সঙ্গে তাঁর যোগসূত্র ও নানা পিভি গোপালানের প্রভাব নিয়ে কথা বলতে শোনা গেছে।

কয়েক দশক আগেই তামিলনাড়ুর থুলাসেন্দ্রাপুরাম ছেড়ে যান পিভি গোপালান। তবে স্থানীয় বাসিন্দারা বলেন, তাঁর পরিবার নিয়মিতভাবে এ এলাকার সঙ্গে যোগাযোগ রেখেছে ও উপাসনালয়ে অনুদান দিয়েছে।

Speaking to supporters, Kamala said, 'When mother got her degree, she wanted to return home to get married as per the family's choice. But luckily he met my father Donald Harris. He was a student from Jamaica. They love each other and get married. Later sister Maya and I were born.

Kamala's sister Maya Harris also spoke at the Chicago event. She recounts how her mother, Shyamala Harris, immigrated to the US from India in hopes of a better life and encouraged her daughters to be 'the creators of their own stories'.

Maya also said that if their late mother had been here, she would have told her how proud she was of her daughters. Then he said, 'A lot has happened. You have to work.'

Kamala Harris (59) was born in 1964 in Oakland, California. His father is Afro-Jamaican Donald Harris. He came to the United States to study economics. There he met Shyamala Gopalan.

During the civil rights movement in the United States, Kamala's parents met at the University of California. This university campus was one of the centers of student movement at that time.

Donald Harris is a professor emeritus at Stanford University. Shyamala Gopalan died of cancer on February 11, 2009. Kamala was elected Attorney General of California the following year.

After Shyamala Gopalan's breakup with Donald Harris, Kamla and her younger sister Maya grew up under the shadow of their mother.

Mother Shyamala once took the two daughters on a trip to India. Occasionally he expressed his fascination or dismay with Tamil Nadu. Kamala Harris highlighted these words in her book 'The Truths We Hold' in 2019.

Kamala Harris has often been heard talking about her links with India and the influence of Nana PV Gopalan.

PV Gopalan left Thulasendrapuram in Tamil Nadu decades ago. However, local residents said his family has been in regular contact with the area and donated to the shrine.
